Model-Based Cluster Analysis of Democracies

چکیده
We apply model-based cluster analysis to data concerning types of democracies, creating an instrument for typologies. Noting several advantages of modelbased clustering over traditional clustering methods, we fit a normal mixture model for types of democracy in the context of the majoritarian-consensus contrast using Lijphart’s (1999) data on ten variables for 36 democracies. The model for the full period (1945-1996) finds four types of democracies: two types representing a majoritarian-consensus contrast, and two mixed ones lying between the extremes. The four-cluster solution shows that most of the countries have high cluster membership probabilities, and the solution is found to be quite stable with respect to possible measurement error in the variables included in the model. For the recent-period (1971-1996) data, most countries ∗Jaewon Jang is a Ph.D. candidate, Department of Political Science, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC 29208 (email: [email protected]). DO INSTITUTIONS REALLY MATTER? Taxation in Industrialized Democracies
New institutionalism has emerged as one of the most prominent research agendas in the field of comparative politics, political economy, and public policy. This article examines the role of institutional variation in political/economic regimes in shaping tax burdens in industrialized democracies. An institutionalist model for tax policy variation is tested across the Organization for Economic Co...

This study proposes the model for interpolating time series to use them to forecast effectively for future. This model is established based on the improved fuzzy clustering analysis problem, which is implemented by the Matlab procedure. The proposed model is illustrated by a data set and tested for many other datasets, especially for 3003 series in M3-Competition data. Comparing to the exist...
متن کاملPolitical Crises and Democracy in Latin America since the End of the Cold War
This paper addresses current problems of democratic instability in continental Latin America, assuming that all its countries have been at least “minimalist” democracies during the years 2000–07. To identify essential factors leading to instability, it focuses on the countries’ most recent and acute political crises. It considers two periods in the post–cold war years: 1992–99 and 2000–07. The ...
متن کاملIntrinsic Distinction of Religious and non-Religious Democracies with an Emphasis on Experiences of Democracy in Islamic Iran and West
Unlike common impressions, religious democracy does not share a common meaning with non-religious (western) democracy due to the fact that the essence of religious democracy seeks unity while non-religious democracies are based on plurality. An objective example of western democracy is built upon the principle of plurality. Therefore disputes and fights have been considered as a natural phenome...
